^ I remember learning by rote from cover to cover, my entire Class X Hindi text for my Class X board exams, after my Hindi teacher failed me in the "hope" examinations (some term for the pre-board exams!) by 4 marks, despite my pleading her to give me those 4 marks so I could escape the crap I received back home. ...

So in the final (board) exam, I put down everything from the text verbatim, no matter what the heck was asked in the question, and trust me, they got more than they wanted for each question; because I only knew the general area from where it came in the text. So I would include a paragraph above it and a paragraph below it as well.. just as a backup. I was pleasantly shocked when I ended up scoring 91/100.. more than many of my classmates whose mother tongue was Hindi.

In hindsight though, she probably stuck to her ground, failing me to ensure I worked doubly hard to pass the board exams. I still remember what she wrote on my failed "hope" exam answer script in red... "XXXX beta, gabarana muth". Sadly, she passed away from breast cancer about 5 years after that. RIP.

That stuff still exists here. For example, Linear Algebra, its all about memorizing concepts and applying to problems. Nothing new.

Yeah, but at least you're asked to apply that memorized stuff (lets say 50% of the times)....in India, they just ask you to regurgitate that stuff on paper again -which is pointless

Actually in public board exams in India, they do test the students on the application of learned concepts/ideas. However, I agree that the system of instruction is fundamentally pedantic. Personally, I prefer the pedantic system of instruction that the British instituted into the Indian educational system (and which hasn't really been revisited since). What I can't stand is some moron lecturing to me using Power Point slides. God, MS Power Point is the bane of civilization.

Moreover, the results are there for all to see. Even in the US today about 80% of the enrollment in graduate programs in mathematics, computer science and all fields of engineering is constituted from students educated in India. So in essence, they are the brains of the country, which hasn't worked out too badly in my view, while American youth get wasted in political science and liberal arts and then wonder why they can't find employment.

The forum has indeed quietened down a lot lately. Looks like it is all downhill from here for cricfire.

Hey Pie.. since it's just the two of us; I found this interesting stat..

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...lation_density

Australia is ranked 236 among the list of sovereign nations in terms of population density.. 7.8 people/square-miles.

I have to visit the barren parts of the nation. It's piqued my curiosity. You'll rank just 6 places above Greenland at 0.067 people/square-miles.

^ Reminds me of the movie Mad Max.. but is that 80% connected to the rest by roads and other infrastructure. If I wanted to drive through it for instance to study the landscape, would I be able to do so?
