ICC Twenty20 World Cup Report Card (continued)

How well did your side go?

Pakistan: to be honest were lucky to make it to the semi finals. Had New Zealand beaten England, Pakistan would not even be in the finals. However, Pakistan did not disappoint (even though they lost) given the opportunity and played an absolute thriller of a twenty20 game against the side that has beaten every side it has faced convincingly, Australia. Pakistan had Australia beaten until the last over, where M. Hussey’s heroics took place (We’ll talk about that when we analyze Australia). In that semi final, the Akmal brothers fired, both scoring half-centuries and Aamer, Rehman and Ajmal (until that final over) bowled well. In fact these players have had decent tournaments. Their most impressive batsman in his world cup was Butt (to everyone’s surprise) averaging 44.60 at an even more astounding strike rate of 131.17! And you wonder why he doesn’t play like this in ODIs… Afridi did not have the best of times with the bat but was instrumental in the bowling department. All in all, it was a good effort from Pakistan team amidst all the controversy surrounding their side, despite all the livid and heartbroken Pakistan fans with that semi final exit. Grade: B+

How well did your side go? It's just way too long to include the report cards of every country in the one article. So I've decided to split it up into two parts. Countries that will be covered in this article: Ireland, Afganistan, New Zealand, Bangladesh, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka

This year’s ICC Twenty20 World Cup has no doubt been a success and has reaffirmed the growing popularity of twenty20 cricket. What I and most people will like from this short format is that it yields unpredictable results! No matter how good your side is, no matter who you have in your side, one mistake could instantly bring the other side back into the game. Momentum changes as quickly as Malinga’s Yorkers – which is what makes Twenty20 cricket so exciting. Now it’s time to rate each country’s performance in this year’s twenty20 world cup.

Ireland: extremely impressive with the ball, keeping the West Indies to just 138 and England to 120 from their allotted 20 overs. Fast bowler Rankin and spinner Dockrell were the stand-outs taking a combined 7 wickets from just two games. Rankin had four of those wickets but leaked a few more runs that he would of liked. Dockrell took three out in one game and in his two games had an economy rate of under 5, which is outsta...

Chennai Super Kings pose with the IPL trophy

Chennai Super Kings pose with the IPL trophy

Congratulations to the Chennai Super Kings and well done coach Stephen Fleming and captain MS Dhoni. Well played indeed against this year’s invincible and ‘god-like’ Mumbai Indians.

Overall, this year’s edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has been a pretty decent tournament to watch amidst all the controversy (won’t go into it as it is already covered in a lot of detail on cricinfo and is very political – which nobody likes reading). And also, I will not be including everything hot/not hot in this tournament as it will literally be the length of a Harry Potter book and defeats the purpose of an ‘article.’ I will only be including what people want to read.

So what was hot in IPL 3?

The Australian imports: the arrival of Australian trio Doug Bollinger, Ryan Harris and Shane Watson sparked and significantly boosted the performance of their respective franchises in Chennai Superkings, Deccan Chargers and Rajasthan Royals. Bollinger was an instrumental player in Chennai’s golden run to the finals and was just as crucial in helping in his side claim the title of Champions for the first time in their franchise’s history. From the 8 matches Bollinger has played, he has taken 12 wickets,...
